Is it time for a divorce? Only you know the answer

There may come a time during your marriage when you begin to wonder if things are going to work out over the long run. In other words, you begin to think about divorce and how it could change your life for the better.

Many people think about divorce, but some decline to take action for one reason or another. Since this is one of the biggest decisions you'll ever make, you need to be 100 percent sure about whether it makes sense to file for a divorce.

If you're thinking about divorce but aren't ready to take action, you may want to do the following:

  • List everything you want to change in your marriage. When doing so, it's imperative to remain realistic. Your list shouldn't be made up of things that are never going to happen.
  • Open the lines of communication. You must make sure you and your spouse are on the same page regarding the status of your relationship and what's to come in the near future. You can only do this if you maintain an open line of communication.
  • Quit making excuses. You need to come to grips with what's going on in your marriage and determine how to fix it, if possible. If you continue to make excuses, it'll only make things worse in the long run.
  • Make decisions together. There may be things you can do to repair your marriage, but you need to tackle this task together. Both individuals need to be "all in" or there is no hope for working things out.
  • Set short- and long-term goals. You need to understand what you want out of your marriage. You also need to share your goals with your partner, to ensure that the two of you are remain on the same page.

Divorce is not the only way to fix your failing relationship. You may discover that it's worth the time to invest in counseling to strengthen your marriage.
